He served with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War before pursuing painting professionally. He worked predominantly in watercolour and gouache, producing landscapes, coastal subjects, Venetian views and marine paintings. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eKnox is particularly associated with his atmospheric watercolour landscapes and maritime subjects. He also produced technically detailed paintings of sailing ships and worked under several pseudonyms, most notably A. D. Bell and R.
