A beautiful early 19th-century Irish landscape, painted in gouache, depicting a tranquil lake scene believed to represent Lough Ree, County Roscommon, with a distant church and spire on a projecting shoreline, sailing boats, and softly receding hills.
The work is attributed to the Circle of James Arthur O’Connor (1792–1847), one of Ireland’s most important Romantic landscape painters. While not signed, the painting shows many characteristics associated with O’Connor and his immediate circle: a balanced classical composition, luminous handling of sky and water, and a calm, poetic interpretation of Irish scenery typical of the 1830–1850 period.
Paintings of Lough Ree and the Shannon lakes were popular subjects among Irish artists of this era, particularly for their picturesque combination of water, low rolling land, and ecclesiastical landmarks.
