Henry Barlow Carter (1804–1868) was a British topographical and marine painter known for his delicate watercolours and drawings, particularly of coastal and maritime scenes around Yorkshire and Cornwall. Born in Scarborough, England, Carter was largely self-taught, though he was influenced by the detailed, observational style popular in 19th-century British landscape painting.

Carter began his career as a drawing master in Scarborough and exhibited works at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He had a strong interest in accurately capturing natural and architectural details, often focusing on seascapes, harbours, and rural English life. His precise yet atmospheric compositions garnered regional acclaim, and his works were collected by both public institutions and private patrons.

In addition to painting, Carter contributed to lithographic publications and was known for his skill in combining artistic sensitivity with topographical accuracy. His legacy includes a body of work that offers valuable insight into 19th-century English coastal environments and everyday life.

This beautiful sketch was likely done in preparation for a larger work and is important as an example of the artists process. Provenance to the rear stating it was purchased from the Simon Carter Gallery who acquired it directly from the descendants of the artist. Taken from one of his original sketchbooks.

The actual drawing measures 6x4 inches. Archival mounted in a deep bevel mount. And framed.13.5x12 inches overall
