Wilfred Knox RBA (1884–1966) – A Scene from the Cotswolds

A beautiful early 20th-century original watercolour by the British artist Wilfred Knox RBA (1884–1966), entitled “A Scene from the Cotswolds.”

A wonderfully atmospheric English landscape, depicting rolling Cotswold countryside beneath a broad, luminous sky. The composition leads the eye down a country track towards a small village, with gently cultivated fields, wooded areas and distant hills creating a lovely sense of depth.

The soft greens, ochres and golden yellows give the work a particularly attractive late-summer character, while the tiny figures on the path add scale and life to the landscape.

The painting is presented in a handsome, substantial ornate gilt frame with decorative corner and central motifs. The overall presentation has considerable decorative appeal and would work particularly well in a traditional, country-house, English country or period interior.

About the Artist

Wilfred Knox was a British painter, engineer and musician, born in Handsworth, Birmingham, in 1884. He served with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War before pursuing painting professionally. He worked predominantly in watercolour and gouache, producing landscapes, coastal subjects, Venetian views and marine paintings.

Knox is particularly associated with his atmospheric watercolour landscapes and maritime subjects. He also produced technically detailed paintings of sailing ships and worked under several pseudonyms, most notably A. D. Bell and R. McGregor, depending on the subject and circumstances under which the work was produced. His work was represented by the established Bristol firm Frost & Reed, which marketed his paintings internationally.

A retrospective exhibition of more than 50 works by Knox was held in England in 1987, and his paintings continue to appear through dealers and at auction.

This Cotswold subject is a lovely example of the more tranquil landscape side of Knox’s work and makes a particularly attractive decorative piece.

A charming original British watercolour with both artistic and decorative appeal – a lovely addition to a collection of English landscape paintings.
